UPMC planning hospital dedicated to children’s heart surgeries

UPMC has a big announcement Tuesday: The health care giant plans to build a special hospital just for children with cardiac issues.The CEO of UPMC calls the new project a needed addition for children in Pittsburgh and around the world.”We have more kids coming from more places than ever before,” Dr. Victor Morell, chair of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and co-director of the Heart and Vascular Institute at UPMC, said.The three-story, 50,000-square-foot Heart Institute at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh will sit on the Lawrenceville campus and feature cardiac catheterization labs, an inter-operative MRI and new inpatient and outpatient spaces.”At UPMC, we grow our services where and when we see the most need,” Leslie Davis, CEO of UPMC, said. “And there is a great need with expanded facilities with the latest technology to care for these children’s hearts.”Davis thanked donors and elected officials who came for the big announcement.She also thanked the Children’s Hospital staff for all their hard work. She looks forward to breaking ground here as a way for Pittsburgh doctors and nurses to treat their youngest neighbors with heart problems wherever they call home.”Whether they live two blocks away or travel 24 hours by plane to get here, families who believe in our excellence and trust us with their most precious gift, their children,” she said.Morell said, “Right this second, there is a kid in the operating room undergoing a heart transplantation. The kid’s not from the area, parents can barely speak any English. The kid’s been supported for about four months with a little device that kept this kid alive. The kid is a couple years of age, and now is undergoing a heart transplant. What a beautiful day to have a heart transplant.”Those delicate heart transplants on children will be done at this new heart institute UPMC is building.Davis expects the facility to be open in early 2026.
