STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Northwell Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze has been recognized with the highest possible rating by the Society of Thoracic Surgeons for its patient care, including outcomes in coronary artery bypass grafting, the hospital has announced.
This three-star distinction places SIUH among the elite cardiac surgery programs in the United States and Canada, the hospital announcement said.
The Society of Thoracic Surgeons rating system is considered one of the most sophisticated and highly regarded measures of quality in healthcare.
The designation received by SIUH is achieved by only approximately 20% of hospitals participating in the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) Adult Cardiac Surgery Database, according to the announcement.
The high performance rating is reflected in outstanding performance for coronary artery bypass grafting surgery in specific metrics. Those include earning a 99.0% overall composite score for isolated coronary artery bypass grafting procedures from January 2021 through December 2023. In addition, the hospital had a 98.8% absence of operative mortality, 95.8% absence of major morbidity, 99.9% use of internal mammary artery and a 99.7% receipt of required perioperative medications, according to the announcement.
“Earning a three-star rating from STS is a testament to the dedication and expertise of our entire cardiac surgery team,” said Dr. Alexander Iribarne, chairman of cardiothoracic surgery at SIUH. “This recognition reaffirms our commitment to providing world-class heart care to our community, ensuring that patients receive the highest level of surgical excellence close to home.”
The STS evaluates cardiac programs using a combination of quality measures, including patient survival rates, complications and adherence to best surgical practices.
The most recent analysis covered a three-year period, from July 2021 to June 2024, and assessed 1,109 cardiothoracic programs across the United States and Canada.
The team’s effort spans the entire network, from local offices to nationally recognized heart centers like the Lois & Richard Nicotra Heart Institute at SIUH, an integral part of Northwell’s Cardiovascular Institute.
The institute offers advanced cardiac diagnostics, treatments, outpatient care and prevention programs.
“This recognition reflects the uniform excellence of SIUH’s cardiac program with its comprehensive array of diagnostic tools and therapies,” said Dr. Mitchell Weinberg, chairman of cardiology at SIUH. “Achieving three-star ratings in these key surgical areas demonstrates our team’s dedication to delivering the highest quality care and improving outcomes for our patients.”
